I don't know if anyone can give you the #1 best way but I can tell you what I did to get a mount.

I play horde so some of this will be from the horde perspective.

1. Skinning - I wanted a gather profession to get cash. When I hit about level 30 I went to the shimmering flats and grinded. I skinned everything there and generally found other players who had extra 'free skins' from the mobs they killed.

In about an hours time I could get 9 stacks of medium and heavy leather. The medium was going for 35s a stack and the heavy was going for nearly 1g each. Since it took a few hours to level I was making a good 10-15g per level from levels 30-35 from just skinning. I saved all that.

When I hit about level 36ish I went to hillsbrad and killed those yetis in the cave. They drop coin and can be skinned. I could get multiple stacks (at least 5) of heavy leather per hour plus the coin drop. I would say I averaged at least 7g profit an hour there.

2. Fishing - Most consider it boring but it's still the most lucrative. Grab a pole, get a little experience, and head to the barrens and fish around wailing caverns. Deviate fish can be fished up. I can sell a stack of these for 5-6g per stack and can fish out at least 2 stacks an hour (10-12g per hour on average). If you were dedicated, you technically could fish out enough of these to pay for your mount in an afternoon full of fishing (would suggest doing it while watching tv and just listening for the splash sound).

I still love fishing as it's the only thing I can make 25g+ per hour at with my level 43.

3. Rare recipes - As a druid we have a distinct advantage that other classes don't at earlier levels. We can goto moonglade (I understand the lunar festival is there now, but it will leave). I use the moonglade spell and buy the rare recipes. I can't remember who sells them but the one is a NE in the inn. She sells a arcanate rob recipe for 2.2g. I resell this for 4g normally. There is a tailor whose name I think is Darnall or something like that. He sells a couple rare recipes for 1.2g which I resell for 2.2g or more depending on supply and demand. This should make you at least 10g a week profit.

Always look at what vendors sell. Normally the stuff with a limited supply of (1) is good stuff. Write it down and check the AH prices. These can be good sellers for 2x the price.

I also sell the strong fishing pole. I buy for 9.11s and sell for about 85s. I do this everyday.

Hope that helps -

I've read similar advice about the gathering professions (herbalism/mining/skinning), but in the end, it all boils down to your server.

I play on a relatively new server (Vek'nilash), where leather sells for... ridiculously little.

Actually, everything sells for comparatively little money. Probably because collectively, the server population doesnt have large amounts of money yet. I've read guides that mention selling stacks of herbs for 5+ gold, and medium leather for >25s.

When I head to my AH, the price of leather is almost not worth the deposit.
A stack of 10 light leather goes for 2s25c. A stack of medium is 7s50c. Considering the time it often takes me to go from where I'm hunting to a main city, and then all the auction deposits and whatnot, I just end up vendoring most of my (medium and lower) leather.

Herbalism's the same deal: I've seen stacks of mageroyal for ~15s. Though briarthorn and bruiseweed do a little better, around 1~2g.

So mainly, I'm stuck with watching the AH; putting up green/blue drops, the occasional stack of herbs, and hoping that someone comes along to buy.

On new servers, there are little funds in the economy. There isn't a whole lot of money to be made. Where there is money is actually in crafting, not gathering. Tailoring is probably the best, with leatherworking still somewhat reasonable. Alchemy is OK, but it normally takes a while for people to be willing to spend money on consumables. Smithing is, sadly, the one profession that you simply can't make good money with.

Gathering starts to become profitable once people get to max level zones, and more so once MC and BWL start being raided - say 3 months after the server starts. And then, it will only be the high end items (rugged leather, thorium, icecap, dreamfoil, etc.) that will sell well. Once a server has "matured", say 6 months after startup, you start to see a better market for certain lower level crafting materials (copper and wool for example). At this point, Enchanting materials start to reach their peak prices. Somewhere between 6 and 9 months higher end materials will fall in price slightly during this period and then remain steady. Certain events (AQ gates) and new quests (Field Duty) will cause temporary price spikes in certain materials.

If you want to make money with a reasonable combination of professions on a new server - Tailoring/Skinning. Everyone always needs bags as a server is starting out, and you build your tailoring skill as you make money.

Hi i am a resto druid in Silvermoon and before i started this druid i had a warrior till lvl 50. The problem, as usual, is G's (gold)!! When i started my druid i had 15g (from the warrior), before reaching lvl 40 i had around 400g and nice armor!! now, after mount and some nice stuff i am saving for Glowing Brightwood Staff (http://www.thottbot.com/?i=5621)!! i have now about 350g.

The thing i wanted to say is that the fastest way to earn money is by trading. Buy cheap and sell for more!! Use Auctioneer mod to scan the auctionhouse as much as possible and look mainly in the trade channel for items, because with ppl you can negotiate, buy mainly from lvl 60's they dont need the money as much as the lower lvl's!!

Good luck!

For me it was and still is:

Copper, Tin, Iron, Mithril and Elemental Earth.

And if you want to be really cheap...... Disenchanting and playing the AH. Arbitrage and controlling your market are key. Buy low, sell high. Buy out any competitor under your pricing. Re-sell at your price. Under-price your competitor out of the market. ETC.

Please Note: I'd recomend a low lv alt for this if you intend to try it, since it is a little underhanded.

They make good money on an established server.

I am by no means rich or experienced and am currently working for my mount money, but I have found a nice supplement to any of other money making strategy.

Expert first aid book buy for 1G sells for 2.5-2.75 gold
Mageweave bandage book buy for 40s sells for 75s-1g
Heavy Silk bandage book buys for 20s sells for 50s-75s

I have done this with 4 sets of books now trick is not to put more than one on at once.

Like I said this is a supplement will not over take a gathering profession I do not believe.

For me Iv found that selling Pots, Raw materials, (stated bfeor) Rare Items/Pots, or Just Sending Certain Items to an Alt to DE and then Selling them in the AH.

Alright, I cannot express this enough to any player, but get a bank. A bank is a low level alt that you just keep in one of the major cities (It doesn't really matter which after the most recent patch) but Ironforge or Orgrimmar are the best. Create an alt and level it to 5. Pick up the enchanting skill and have it camp by your mailbox. Now, whenever you are questing you will pick up greens and the occasional blue. Anything else that might be signifigantly important to be able to sell you should mail to your bank as well. Mail everything that can be sold at AH to the bank.
When your bank first starts it is a good idea to mail it 1g as well and possibly a couple bags. Once you have that set up, check AH for good prices on the crap you've picked up from doing quests/instances. If you can't turn a signifigant profit from selling it, disenchant that thing. Save up all the mats to form stacks of the disenchanted materials then sell them in AH for a low bid and pretty high buyout (not too much tho, you don't want people to pass up your items) because people want enchanting items on demand, trust me. The best thing about auctioning the enchanting mats is that they have no deposit for the sale (but the AH docks you money if you do sell it in the end) because at first your bank is poor. I'd say if you do this right you should have at least 20g in the first week. You'll get better at it and make even more money the next week IF you keep up on this system. Easy money doing the stuff you already do.
Next, on your main character pick up skinning and whatever you want as a secondary profession. Skinning is so great because it doesn't require a lot wandering around (time burner) to find the mats. Also, there aren't as many skinners out there as you'd think so once in a while you'll find people killing stuff that you can just walk behind them and skin! In the low levels, I vendor the light stuff or turn them in for War Effort rep, but as you get higher and higher the stuff becomes even more expensive. This way, you can get a "fun" skill (like Engineering or Alchemy) and still make huge amounts of gold!!!

I appreciate the utility of many of these strategies for making money for a mount or whatever else your character needs, but, frankly, it's starting to sound too much like WORK to me. If I have to devote that much mental energy to it, I'd rather use it to make REAL money in the REAL world. To each his own, just my 2c.

I do this and the amount of money I make is just insane! When I dinged 40 I went and bought my mount and had alot of gold left over ... I'm 45 now and my brother is 42 he is out of town all the time so he cant put in the time to build up money like I can, now that the rest of my group are mounted I just went and bought his mount for him and sent him the cash for the riding skill and it barely put a dent in my account...I will make it all back in a couple days...
I keep all my gold on my lvl6 enchanter in IF also..kind of the same thing as dont carry your debit card with you all the time.
I also enchant any greens I can with him and put them on the block...if I cant enchant it then it gets dis'd...

This system works VERY well..if you really want to make some gold than you need to give this a try.
