Just some advice for those of you dancing around with the idea of specing balance.

Don't do it.

Unless of course you are in a bwl/AQ40 clearing guild and are able to get the cloth gear necessary for specing this way.

Balance is useless without the gear.

To each his own, Woodsman. I'm balance and carry no cloth. At 54, I crit for over 1k with a SF. Also, wrath with innervate is a force to behold. If it comes down to hand-2-hand, I drop down to bear. Mostly, I stay in Moonkin. Each of us have distinct styles and it would be a shame to deter others b/c you found balance was not your style. Be positive..no need for a druid to be negative.

I was balance unless I respecced, I love balance, I just tried to take the other side now, as I was balance all the time I grinded up my charachter and I still carry balance (leathergear from PvP and PvE)

If you know how to play, you wont have a problem.

the fact is that if you dont have 400-500+ spell damage, the spec is useless

You can get around 350 and that is good enough, excluding your trinkets.

I think most people would be hard pressed to get over 100 spell damage gear without raiding, dont you?

Its a fact, before you get raid gear, specing moonkin is NOT for the DPS. Plain and simple. I dont care what you want to think, moonkin DPS is terrible before you can start gathering good gear. Sure, its another way to play the class but stop pretending 1k crits for a 3.5 sec cast is alot of DPS.

Moderator Warning:

This thread comes very close to breaking a forum posting rule as follows:
3) Posts specifically trolling for flames as the main topic of discussion get the thread wiped because whatever opinion or truth may be, it doesn't have much to do with WoW or druids.

While all points of view are welcome, there seems to be little point to your thread other than calling for balance druids to flame you. If you had a bad experience with moonkin, please share that, or at least offer something new to the debate on the topic.

+100 to damage is not terribly hard to get, I had +130 before I even hit 60. In fact if you PvP a bit and get exalted in AV and AB you can get a weapon off-hand combo (Sageclaw + Therazane's Touch) with +63, then put a spell power enchant on it for +93 just on your weapon. Orb of the Darkmoon is open world farmable for another +22 dmg, the gloves from friendly with Cenarion are good for another +28, so total there is +143 without a single raid or even rare drop. Then figure in other rep/PvP gear like the new WSG pants, the spell crit belt from honored w/ AB, the caster ring from honored w/ WSG, the cloak w/ +dmg from AV it adds up. Then consider the fact that you will get some drops/ feralheart for some of the other slots. Getting over 200, maybe even close to 300 is definitely doable, even easier if you go cloth.

[apologize for wall of text]

If you are looking to top a damage meter, then moonkin is probably not for you in any event. If you want to do real good dps, and bring all the other druid tools to your groups (off-healing, battle rez, feral skills, etc...) then give moonkin a chance.

I enjoy it because I like what I get to do in it, that is melee with my weapon using plate armor and nuking MFs, FFs, NGs for control, barkskin, and the occassional 1 sec wrath. Other than a shammy, its as close to a battle mage as this game gets.
