So, I just joined a raiding guild, we are on a new server, I'm new to the game. Playing for about 3 months now. I only have experience in Feral (lvling) and was respecing and gathering healing gear (figured they would want me resto).

Now I was asked if I would be moonkin spec for the mage group. I agreed, but am now scrambling to download all the info into my brain.

I love to PvP, but the guild comes first. There looks to be two types of moonkin camps, cloth wearers (damage gear) and leather panzer? (survivability).

It looks like from a raiding view, the cloth wearing is probably want I want to aim my gear gathering.

I need to still be able to heal the best I can, really hate losing NS :-(. What builds do raiders that are moonkin recommend with some resto talents still intact?

BTW, my guild is working MC (downed Domo), so thats the area of gear I will have access to atm.

I think its karma this happened, lol. I was just laughing at moonkin the other day :-(

*as you can see, long time lurker, first time poster, lol have always loved this forum since my early days of EQ*

*edit* This is the build that I'm considering. Comments? Suggestions?

Screenshot or it didn't happen!

Just kidding that is great (assuming you want to be a moonkin). There are a lot of balance druids out there that would love that kind of acceptance from their guild.

Now the bad news, your not going to get much help gear wise from raiding MC. There are a couple of pieces of Cenarion with +dmg you'll get, but like you said the big numbers are on cloth, and you will be in stiff competition for any non-set piece cloth damage items with the mages, locks, and possibly if your guild is that open-minded shadow priests. Same goes for rings and trinkets.

I would recommend getting as much as you can on your own outside of the raids and save as much dkp as possible for the big ticket items (ToEP).

I always stayed leather myself (just a personal choice, liked having plate rquivalent armor), but your right in a raid cloth will probably be the better way to go. There are some nice pieces available as rep rewards with various BGs if you like PvP, even the blue rank set is pretty good from a balance perspective (blue pants rock).

For the neck I would recommend the Orb of the darkmoon, which you can farm yourself. Also look at some of the stuff you can get with the badge turn-ins and CC rep.

That is an odd request; one you'll prob not see often repeated. The Public Test Realms are open atm; I'd highly recomend copying your druid and pre-made druid over on Monday (character tranfer is open mon-fri) and try out some builds. You'll have your own character to test actual performance, and the pre-made to see what'd be like with gear to back it up.

I almost always make a moonkin' test... there is somthing loveable about those feathery fools.

For build, I like what you got; very similiar to how I do moonkin on PTR's... the main difference is I'd drop Insect Swarm/Imp Rejuv and take 5/5 Imp. Starfire and Moonfury. Insect Swarm is "bleh", imp rejuv is ok at best. Where as if your gonna go a dps build; might aswell get all you can out of it for DPS. I also prefer 5/5 Nature's Focus and 2/5 Nature's Grasp.. but that's a minor point.

The mages fight over who's group our moonkin druid get's put into.

Cloth would probably be the best way to start imo. Aim for +200 dmg and then more and more. Basically, steal mage gear ;)

Don't discount insect swarm. It is a very nice pulling tool since you don't have to be facing your target to cast....

I think you really want 5/5 improves Starfire, and probably 5/5 Moonfury. I'd say pass on Imp Heal Touch, but that's just me.

Starfire is your efficient direct damage spell in Moonkin, and the more DPS you pack along with it the better. The more you reduce cast time the more intense it becomes since it delivers more of your +damage bonus per second.* At +200 damage gear, here is a look at Starfire Rank 8:

+200 Damage, 2/5 Imp Starfire, 4/5 Moonfury
DPS: 262
DPM: 2.8

+200 Damage, 5/5 Imp Starfire, 5/5 Moonfury
DPS: 293
DPM: 2.8

So, if you would Improve Starfire and finish Moonfury, you would see an improvement in intensity of 31 DPS, or 12%. For 31 DPS I'd find 4 talent points from somewhere else.

Other assumptions for both cases:

Average Base Spell Damage: 540
Base Mana: 340
Base Cast Time: 3.5
Spell Crit: 8%
Spell Crit Damage: 200%
Mana Cost Reduction: 9%
Moonfury: Applied AFTER +damage bonus

Also, keep in mind that at higher levels of +damage, you'll be gimping yourself even more DPS. Here would be the situation at +400 spell damage:

+400 Damage, 2/5 Imp Starfire, 4/5 Moonfury
DPS: 332
DPM: 3.5

+400 Damage, 5/5 Imp Starfire, 5/5 Moonfury
DPS: 372
DPM: 3.6

Amount of DPS you're gimping yourself: 40 DPS, still 12%. I imagine that 40 DPS over the course of time adds up to a scary big number you'd rather dish out than not dish out.

DPS wise, you're MUCH better off skipping VENGANCE than skimping on Improved Starfire. So if you don't want to take points from Restor, take them from Vengance.

Without belaboring the numbers again, at +200 damage gear, your DPS would increase from 262 to 284 if you simply took the 4 points out of Vengance and filled out Improved Starfire and Moonfury. I'd still want Vengance though for that occasional big number, which always brings a smile to your beak.

*Reducing the cast time of your spells delivers more of your +damage bonus per second. At 3.5 seconds, you deliver your base damage plus your damage gear bonus. By decreasing your cast time, you effectively increase the potency of your damage gear, since you deliver the damage bonus faster. I was surprised how greately cast time improved DPS, and this is part of the reason why. Which is why the Shaman cast time reduction of lightning bolt by 1 second makes me want to roll an elemental Shaman. That 1 second reduction makes the DPS of LB Rank 10 surpass Fireball Rank 12 at over +200 damage gear assuming DPS maximizing talents are taken by both the Shaman and the Mage. And it makes LB more efficient. But there are itemization issues, mana pool issues, and ATM cast range issues which is why I haven't yet.
