Botanists have discovered a new species of
giant self-destructing palm in Madagascar
which is so large that it can be seen in
satellite photos.

It's definitely not large enough to be seen in satellite photos. Probably when they say it can be seen on Google Earth they probably mean it is identifiable due to it being a unique size for what it looks like. There are many other objects much larger than it.

Pretty weird how it spent so much energy flowering it killed itself...Didn't think nature would work that way...making overachieving plants and all ;D

To a lesser degree it's almost universal; consider how much time and energy mammalian parents invest in their young.
