My main in WoW is a Human Warlock. I'm about to ding level 29 tonight and as I look down the road I see level 40 looming in the distance and visions of a mount spring into my head.

However, I have 0 cash. Literally, each level when I get new spells, any cash I have goes for the spells and upgrading my pet grimoires. When I hit 28 I didn't even have enough to get all my pet grimoires so I had to farm a bit to get enough cash for that.

I didn't worry about being broke at first, as low levels are always broke. When I hit my teens, I still didn't worry. 40 was a long ways off after all. Getting into my 20s and cash started coming in pretty good, but spell/grimoire prices went up. Started getting a bit frustrating.

Now as I approach 30 the situation hasn't improved.

I need tips on making money without camping the auction house for buy low/sell high items. Tradeskill-wise, I am a tailor/enchanter, neither one makes much money as there are so many tailors and enchanters out there.

I sell everything I get (I don't disenchant dropped items anymore, now that I can tailor items for that purpose). I don't buy food as I am a cook and can make plenty of stuff that way. I buy drinks once in a while if I'm running low and plan a lot of mana-intensive activities. All my armor and weapons I either make or get from drops/quests.

So who can give me tips on starting my mount fund? :)

I can't help except to say, pick up everything and sell everything. I have too little space in my inventory to take my own advice but my wife's char picks up everything and sells everything and has 14g easy on average even after buying spells.

Me, on the other hand, have nothing. I have several skills I haven't been able to buy from previous levels much less for my current level. I'm about to be 38 and that means more skills I can't aquire. I may be lucky and be able to afford 1 of them. Mount? HAH, no way can I afford one by 40.

I just figured that picking and choosing your skills per level that you could afford was part of the game.

It improved greatly for me once i got to level 37. Before i just barely have enough gold to buy my spells. This time heading into 38 i a m siting at a +25 in the gold department. Made 15 gold just last night. Trinkets sell very while !!

I am thinking that i will be able to have all my spells and a mount if i want it by level 40.

Herblism and skinning have really paid off !!!

Humm .... Warlocks get a free mount at 40.

Warlocks and Paladins both get a mount "spell" at level 40. They are the only classes that get this "spell".

Training prices are also being adjusted for the better in that department :) So like me, you have 10 levels or so to get that 100g (or 80g in my case :P)

I was sort of silly. At the lower levels, the armor and weapons aren't worth the backpack slot that they occupy. Items that stack sell for a lot more than random_armor01. However, somewhere between 15 and 25 that all changed. All these freaking Alliance Ashenvale quests are usually resulting in swords and things that my druid looks at and goes, "What's this for?" However, I go over to Mr. Happy-I-Buy-Fish and he gives me 50sp for them. Even the yard trash started dropping non-green armor/weapons that sell to the vendor for 10-20sp. I've started to only keep items that are used for tradeskills on me, everything else gets dropped for armor, weapons and the like.

And if you've got friends that you play with, lowbie instance dungeons are great money makers. Blackfathom Deeps resulted in about 2-3gp for me in a five person group after selling all the junk no one wanted. If you're too high for the dungeon, it's even better, because your gear is probably already better, so you can sell it all (unfortunately you give up xp, but hey).

In beta my druid had money problems and trouble affording spells. But since release my druid has always had more than enough money to afford his spells and anything else he's wanted. The only thing different I did in release opposed to beta is I never spent my money on anything else except for spells. Also I got additional bags at an early age so I was able to endure longer hunting trips before I would have to go back to town to sell. Whenever I filled up I would go back to town to sell, I wouldn't continue questing. I sell every peice of armor or weapons I don't use. My two tradeskills are Herbalism and Tailoring, occasionally I'll sell some of my hides and leather to other tradeskillers however most of the time I sell them to vendors to quickly free space in my bag slots instead of waiting to sell them to players. By the time I hit level 40 I had 82gp in the bank after buying spells. Only 8gp from affording a mount. The key is to start saving your cash from the beginning.

Farming instances is a great way to make cash too...the green/blue drop rate there is a lot higher, the cash drops are higher, cloth drops more frequently/higher amounts, and the gray(vendor trash) items are worth a lot too. You could probably start farming Deadmines and do fairly well there, though you're not going to be soloing Vancleef I don't think =-p

People pay silly amounts for things sometimes on my server's AH though. A like +1stam/+3int ring(green)..decent enough, last I looked the bid on it was over 2g... and a friend sold a so-so blue wand (like.. 21 DPS, kinda shoddy for a 22 level requirement) for 3g or so.

Are you sure Paladins do as well? I haven't seen anything that references a mount spell for Paladins at 40. My boyfriend plays a Paladin and would be greatly interested in such info, hehe.

Paladins do, for sure. Holy warhorse or something like that. Currently the quest is super easy, you just talk to the quest NPC and get the horse at 40. :P

Well, farmed mobs in the Wetlands last night looking for Iridescent Pearls (only found one :(), but managed to get a bit over 2G. Then I dinged 30 and see that I'm almost 1G short of just getting my spells, let alone the pet grimoires :( Bah, I say!

As a hunter, I get to choose one new skill per level. That's what I can afford.
I think that is just how the game is meant to be.

Hrm..my hunter never really had money trouble, except when I was throwing money away on a lot of items I didn't really need. Are you not using guns and mining/engineering? I could maybe see having trouble if you're just sticking to bows

I only had problems in the low 20s....with not being able to get all the skills. Once you get into the 30s, I started "saving" some cash and actually starting to build up some after skills. I wasnt in a rush to get a mount at 40, and didnt farm for cash just waiting till I had enough and I was able to get one at 46 after my skills werent bought.

Yeah I almost dread dinging on my Warlock... between the 5-6 spells and the 3-4 pet tomes you have to buy, I've *never* had enough money to get them all. I'm actually a little ticked - I ding'd 32 the night before the patch where they reduced training prices, but since they gave NO advance notice of the patch, I didnt wait to train my new abilities... It doesnt help that half of them are completely and utterly worthless and you cant know that unless you are a forum junkie. (Detect lesser invis = absolutely pointless, for example.)

Yeah, I know that now, but didn't until yesterday. I was hunting for Fen Dwellers in the Wetlands - can't remember the exact name, but they walk around stealthed. I figured "Oh, goodie, I can finally use that spell I bought and avoid getting jumped at the wrong time" Wrong!

Is there anything that lets you see stealthed mobs without being right on top of them?

If your gathering money by looting anything any everything, as i did, make sure to invest in big bags, they help with the income quite a bit.

Why do I hear a song about big bags in my head now?

Tiane
12-23-2004, 05:29 PM
I like big bags, and I cannot lie,
those other druids cant deny,
that when a mob walks in with a really pretty mace
and a round shield in your face
You want some
Wanna vendor out front
Cuz you notice that your bag is stuffed
..

Some bags are filled with treasure,
and some with fancy dress,
but when they're filled with platinum,
they're the bags that I like best.
Big bags!
...

alright I'll stop now!

but since they gave NO advance notice of the patch
Actually there was kind of a notice. They posted the exact same patch notes as well as the patch live on the ERU Beta servers as week before they went to the live servers. There was even a sticky post about it on Monkly. :p

For my mount, I skimped on abilities that I don't use/need right off hand and sold every green item I got at the AH at 2x the default AH price. I started to sell a few potions as well. I fell at 75 gold when I dinged and a guild mate loaned me 15 gold while he saves up for his mount (I gotta pay him back before he hits 75 gold. hehe). Now I'm 43, and have over 50 gold.

(Detect lesser invis = absolutely pointless, for example.)
It's a situational thing. Just wait until later levels. There's TONS of rogues all over the place. I'm just thankful I'm a rogue as well and I generally see them with proximity before they see me. :p

but they walk around stealthed.
I actually think they are more of a triggered spawn if anything. There's times I would never see them unless I was ontop of them! Pretty tricky with them.

Just wait until Arathi Mountains and you goto Stormgarde. You'll be glad you got that spell. ;)

Advance notice as in a date... not what was in it. It was basically a surprise as there was no mention of a scheduled patch on the forums or sites, I went to bed, next day I'm patching...

And in, WoW invis != stealth. Detect invis does NOT detect steatlh. Since mages can no longer invis, the only things which can are the succubus/imp warlock pets, and if you get a potion of invis which lasts like 15 seconds or so.

ooh and the date was rumored for Tuesday (the day it went live). Len posted that in responce to one of my posts.

I'm hearing a few people are creating horde and alliance characters, getting them high enough to travel to Gadgetzan for the AH there. Alliance only pets are put up for auction for 1s buyout or such, immediately logging to the horde character, buying the pet(s) then going to Org or Undercity to sell in /2 or the AH.
Also doing the same in reverse. Basically becoming a smuggler of items found in one faction and selling to the other.

Other than something like that or the tradeskills, use the AH as your vendor for green items. For green items that don't sell well, set a buyout price that nets you profit over going to a regular vendor but is still cheap compared to other similiar items for that level. Milage may vary.

Quit questing and do instance runs for a few days. Get groups that allow you to roll on anything that isn't an immediate upgrade to a present group member. No NGB loot setting (NGB loot setting isn't fair distribution. Plate classes qualifies to roll on everything, while cloth wearers only get cloth rolls. Also, say you can train to use 2H axes, but haven't yet because you haven't found one worth using. A blue 2H axe of uberness drops, you will not be able to roll. Your class *can* use it after training, but you, as yet, cannot. Therefore the game will not allow you to roll.)

Research trade skills items that are drop only and try to hunt in those areas. (e.g. fused wiring for engineering from Gnomeregan)

So in Gadgetzan you can auction between factions? How do I get there? :)

DemonMage
12-28-2004, 01:05 PM
Ashenvale -> Barrens South Exit -> Thousand Needles SE corner exit -> South along the road just alittle bit

Normally it's pretty empty on most servers...cross-faction AH used to be in Booty Bay, which made it more usuable.

You can AH between alliances in there, but you can't do it on the same account, or the person I knew in Beta was smoking crack.

He tried that himself. Put up an auction with a bunch of items at 1 silver buy-out. Logged out, logged in and tried to buy the items with no luck.

Gneaus
12-28-2004, 02:36 PM
You could be right on that. I haven't ever tried it, just relaying what I'm mearing on the rumor mill. If true, you need a 2nd account or a partner in crime, so to speak.

Kerech
12-29-2004, 09:11 AM
Bah, so much for that idea.

Why can't you mail items/money between alts on a non-PvP server? I can understand in PvP, but not PvE. Oh well, guess my Orc and Troll alts will have to fend for themselves :)

It's not like I had anything to give them anyway, I just wanted to be able to make them bags to start out with.

I used the auction house for the first time yesterday and all my stuff sold! Granted, my stuff was mostly green junk, a few patterns, pearls, leather, cloth, etc. But I ended up making close to 2 gold, which at level 17 is pretty darn good (i think)

The AH is so much better than EQ's bazaar-thingy cause you don't have to stay logged in all day/night. Go Blizzard!

I actually suggest to sell only green items within the AH. Everything else, unless it's a component in a repicie or a recipie itself, don't sell too well. You really need to know items and their rarity in order to get away with selling non-green items in the AH.
