Sending a question to the masses here. I'm not sure I really understand the need/greed thing. So far I've only rolled need once and that was just to test it out. I never know when its proper to roll need. To me, you only need something if your slot is empty. Otherwise it would be greed, just trying to accumulate "more" or "better" of something in RL is usually out of greed and not out of need. However, this means I loose every roll because need is always rolled first and someone always needs an item. Granted, I am still quite young, so I'm not missing out on super equipment, but what better time to lean proper etiquette. Does anyone have a good rule of thumb to follow for when I should roll need and when roll greed. Most games I've played had class specific items even at low levels, so you know when a piece is for you or not. Someone help me out.

Thanks,
Nyte

Here's how I see it.

Need = an upgrade I would wear full-time.
Greed = a situational upgrade (like feral gear), something I would just vendor sell, give to a friend, put on the AH, etc.

However, if there's a specific feral piece I want, I may talk it over with the group/raid before it drops, to see if they're ok with my rolling "need" on it.

Need is class or race specific...

Greed is vendor food.

I won't roll on cloth, but if I see a good mace or agil/str leather I will roll. If someone needs it more, and it's not BoP I will gladly give it over if I win.

It was explained to me that Need was for things you will actually use and Greed is for things you just want to sell. If you know those bracers aren't as good as the ones you have now, you shouldn't roll need, even though you are able to equip the item, you know you never will.

Etiquette wise you should never roll need on an item you are unable to equip, although I don't know how it works with enchanters in your group.

Well. Now, some classes are dual-weld with item classes.

For instance, I was running Shadowfang Keep with 2 mages, myself, and my friends 60 shammy.

He didn't roll on anything, because lower level items should go to lower level players. I would not roll on any cloth that dropped, even though I was a cloth wearer too. It's just good manners.

I'll roll on SC gear if there's no rogue in group/raid that doesn't need it more than me. Weapons are a big thing, you'll find rogues rolling on swords and maces as well as Warriors getting their own spectrum of weapons.

When I played my rogue, I rolled only Need on weapons I plan to use full time within my hands. I didn't do any of the stupid weapon switching macros to get the "most" out of sinister strike and the alike abilities.

Everyone rolls on weapons because:

1) stats

2) disenchant

3) AH

Don't forget enchanters and alts.

I usually discuss these matters with my party, if there's an enchanter, make sure they actually DO enchants and don't just disenchant the item to make money. There are a LOT of enchanters that don't actually do enchants.

I find I don't roll need very often at all. Most of my gear is already what I want. If I see something I need, I roll on it. If it is for my alt, I ask to see if I can roll. . .just be curtious.

To me there should be 3 ranks
Need - Upgrades that will be equiped full time
Use - Items that would be helpful for a secondary set (I'm a healbot, but I declare Use on feral/rogue items)
Greed - I need money and these items are only good for that

Always roll need without question if it is an item I need. For items with my Use rank, I ask if anyone needs, if no one needs, I'll roll. i.e. I run with a rogue that has full shadowcraft, so I get to roll need on those items if I'm with him. If there isn't an enchanter that is willing to disenchant items and then let the group roll on the shards, I roll greed. If there is a friendly enchanter allong, I cancel the rolls.

/agree as well

In addition, on all pickup groups before rolling need I request they link the item they are upgrading from in the /party channel first. That way everyone in the group can judge. Either that or do an inspect on the person to verify for yourself if the player is being honest.

I also make sure with every group I am in that all major/known drops are discussed ahead of time who is rolling on what to avoid any disputes and to not waste time.

The only way I let players roll need on items to disenchant is if they do it right on the spot. We then do a /random to see who gets the resulting DE item. If the chanter doesn't comply then they don't get to roll need. If they do, they are kicked immediately, no questions.

I don't have time or tolerance for looting bs.

I'll often ask if we have an enchanter in group, and if we get a BOP item that no-one needs, it goes to the enchanter. Then we will seperately roll on the disenchanted shard for AH/vendor etc.

If its a guld enchanter, however, they just get it automatically as they do discount enchants for us :)

Otherwise, its Need if I will equip the item and it is an upgrade on my existing item and greed if it isn't. If I don't think it will even sell on AH however, I will just pass because I don't want the hassle of dealing with it :p

Thanks for all the advice. As I finally start setteling down and pick one of my druids to truly call my main and a faction to call my own, I have 5 now over level 15 ;), I want to make sure I don't start a rep as a ninja. Horde/Alliance both have their ups and downs, but I could never deal with people thinking I am dishonest. Who knows, I could miss out on a good guild invite by rolling against some GL's alt. Anyways, thanks for the advice, and for those that are interested, I'll probably decide soon where to call home.
